Paper Abstract

For many applications it would be desirable to operate a gyroklystron amplifier at the second harmonic, as this would reduce the applied magnetic field. In previous work1 harmonic amplification has been examined for cold, weakly relativistic beams; i.e. nkrL ≪ 1 where n is the harmonic number, k the perpendicular wavenumber, and ]rL the Larmor radius. We will extend this analysis to include moderately relativistic and relativistic beams with a spread in velocity. The distinction between moderately relativistic and relativistic is that in the former we assume that the beam is weakly relativistic but nkrL, is not necessarily small, and in the latter we use the full set of equations, including guiding center drift and changes in axial momentum. A comparison is made among the three models.
