Paper Abstract

An electron transfer process in fluorite crystals, Eu2+ + Sm3+h(nu ) yields Eu3+ + Sm2+ first studied by P. P. Feofilov, has been used to supplement photoconductivity experiments for the study of ionization and trapping. The identity of the donor and acceptor centers are positively established in the electron transfer experiment. Ratios of the cross sections for trapping by locally compensated and non-locally compensated trivalent ions in fluorite lattices were obtained. The affect of an interstitial fluoride ion on the ionization potential of Sm+2 was measured. Evidence for trapped exciton states is reviewed here and compared to recent spectroscopic evidence for excitons trapped at Ti3+ in sapphire.
