Paper Abstract

A cost effective process for manufacturing of silica glass optical components via sol-gel is presented. The process is characterized by the thermomechanical "quasi-ideal" isotropy of the aerogel and the glass it forms, and by precision molding, at least up to 1/1000, without intrinsic dimensional limitations. The undoped material has at least 85% optical transparency in the whole spectral range from 185 nm up to 3200 nm, the impurities being mainly at the ppb level or below. The glass optical properties can be adjusted by doping. An industrial model and some cost considerations are given.
