Remote sensing in detection of geophysical changes in Talisay River, Bataan, Philippines

Paper Abstract

Viewing the Earth from space provides cheap, fast and efficient extraction of data. Free software like Google Earth can be utilized for change detection in rivers and coastlines which enable monitoring of past and present change of a specific area with high precision using high resolution satellite imageries. Changes in width of the river outlet, riverbank and coastlines were measured via remote sensing from 2005 to 2014. Actual measurements were gathered in 2016 using south total station (NTS-362R6L) and compared to remote sensing data. RMSE was computed to evaluate the horizontal positional accuracy of the two datasets. Results showed that Talisay river outlet decreased in width size due to the accumulated sediments coming from the upstream. The riverbanks widen overtime due to erosion. Coastlines near Talisay river narrowed in size due to coastal erosion and human intervention. Computed RMSE in the area was low which ranged from 0.24m to 0.94m indicating horizontal positional accuracy and measurement of Google Earth. Average level of tides per month showed the high tide levels decreased per year (2004-2015) while low tide levels increased overtime. This projection can be observed in the area wherein the base height of the sea was higher than before, although lower height of high tides was experienced than before, it was observed that during low tides the change of depth of the tide was lower. An interview was conducted to gather data on natural events and effects of human activities in the area which supported the remote sensing data.
