Hz-scale-linewidth Brillouin/erbium fiber laser for interferometric fiber sensors

Paper Abstract

We demonstrate Hz-scale-linewidth light generation via a compact Brillouin/erbium fiber laser (BEFL), which utilizes 4-m erbium-doped fiber (EDF) as both the Brillouin and linear gain media. The Brillouin pump is transferred to Brillouin Stokes emission with 0.089-nm wavelength shift and over 50 dB phase noise suppression. The linewidth of the BEFL is estimated to be 1.8-Hz. The significant phase noise reduction and ultra-narrow-linewdith emission of this BEFL lead to a number of applications in interferometric fiber sensors, precise spectroscopy and so forth.
