Intelligent pipelines with integrated fibre optics for single-ended distributed strain sensing

Paper Abstract

We introduce intelligent pipes with integrated optical fibres for distributed strain sensing along the entire length of pipelines. A state-of-the-art Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR) interrogator can be used to monitor multiple pipelines with a length up to 60 km each. Different installation schemes and fibre-optic cable designs have been evaluated in a trial on a test pipeline.
