Quantitative 3D imaging of Wayang Kulit puppet positions

Paper Abstract

Wayang Kulit is the UNESCO-listed Indonesian art of shadow puppetry, in which the puppet masters apply various optical methods to play with elaborate shadow images during the performance. In order to help preserving the art of Wayang Kulit, it is necessary to document the variety of puppet movements executed by the puppet masters. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one such document that can be found in the literature. On top of that, this document only reports qualitative descriptions of the puppet movements, therefore lacking the quantitative details of the puppet mechanics. In this research we develop a quantitative 3D imaging method, comprising a stereoscopic shadow imaging setup and a digital image analysis tool, which is suitable to perform detailed measurements of the shadow puppet positions. The stereoscopic shadow imaging setup uses two colored light sources and a white screen, while the digital image analysis tool has two steps: first, we match patterns between the color-coded sub-images to compute the puppet image shift between them; second, we use geometrical optics to determine the puppet position using the known positions of the colored light sources and the computed puppet image shift. We demonstrate our method by measuring the 3D position of one of the most popular puppets in Wayang Kulit. In the future, our method will allow us to perform two analysis: (i) a quantitative 3D mechanical analysis of the puppet movements, and (ii) a Digital Humanities analysis on the various puppet movements, in which we combine the quantitative mechanical data with its qualitative context, e.g. related to the various types of puppet characters.
