Collective Förster energy transfer modified by planar plasmonic mirror (Presentation Recording)

Paper Abstract

This is an invited presentation devoted to the Förster energy transfer in plasmonic systems. Förster energy transfer processes are now actively studied in various fields that bridge physics, biology and medicine. One can try to control the efficiency of the transfer by embedding the donors and acceptors into the structured electromagnetic environment. Available experimental studies yields contradictory reports on suppressed [1], enhanced [2] or unaffected [3] transfer. We present a rigorous Green function theory of the collective Förster energy transfer between the arrays of donor and acceptor molecules lying on the planar metallic mirror that has been previously available only for spherical nanoparticles [4]. We reveal strong modification of the effective transfer rate by the mirror. The rate can be either suppressed or enhanced depending on the relative positions between acceptor and donor arrays. This is a collective effect, completely absent for a single donor-acceptor pair put above the mirror. Our results may explain the slowdown of the transfer rate recently observed in experiment for dye molecules put on top of plasmonic mirrors and layered hyperbolic metamaterials [1]. [1] T. Tumkur, J.
