Paper Abstract

The purpose of the work described in this paper is to study experimentally the fuel droplet temperature behavior in order to better understand the processes of the fuel injected in combustion chambers of engines and to validate theoretical models of droplets vaporization. This paper describes the temperature measurement of small fuel droplets using an IR detection system, composed of two coupled off-axis parabolic mirrors and a MCT LWIR detector. The system measures the temperature behavior of a chain of droplets with equal diameter and spacing. Our system has been used to quantify the temperature drop associated with 200 micrometer diameter droplets moving at a velocity of greater than 5 m/s in ambient air. Finally, we describe a feasibility study of how to do this measurement when the droplets are inside a flame. Initial experimental results are presented.
