Intelligent search and retrieval of a large multimedia knowledge base for the Hubble Space Telescope

Paper Abstract

During the design and fabrication of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Perkin Elmer generated substantial amounts of project documentation in a variety of forms including project memos, reports, correspondence, drawings, and videotapes. Over the fifteen-year scheduled mission lifetime, timely access to this extensive documentation will be critical for the successful operation and maintenance of the telescope. We have developed a prototype for a microcomputer-based document retrieval assistant (DRA) which integrates hypertext and natural language capabilities to facilitate access to a large multimedia knowledgebase generated from HST project documentation. The prototype's hypertext capability allows casual or unfamiliar users to "browse" through the various media associated with the OTA. An intelligent search capability allows rapid access to documents which address a particular topic or concept. This mode employs a natural language interface to permit users to express a domain- specific query without requiring the use of keywords. The natural language interface is the focus of the present discussion.
