Paper Abstract

This paper describes an approach to mammogram analysis which detects suspicious regions in mammograms by comparing newly acquired mammograms with previous screenings of the same patient. Utilization of multiple screenings is motivated by the desire to reduce false positives and to increase sensitivity to true positives. Because of intractability of mammogram registration at the pixel level we propose a strategy for comparing mammograms regionally while taking into account differences normally expected between two images. In the proposed method mammograms are compared in three steps. First, mammograms are put into correspondence by using internal control points. Next, the images are partitioned into statistically homogeneous regions. Finally, the regions are compared by using intensity and texture measures and particular differences are labeled suspicious. This work concentrates on the issues of mammogram correspondence and region comparison.
