Measurement of trace ethane using mid-IR LED of 3μm

Paper Abstract

This paper presents our latest work on trace ethane gas measurement using a mid-infrared light emitting diode (MIR-LED) and a PbSe photodetector. Our measurement takes advantage of both a relative high emission spectrum of MIR-LED at 3μm region where ethane has the strongest baseline absorption, and current driving that a lock-in algorithm is be able to involved to improve the signal to noise ratio of the system. The average deviation between the standard and the measurement of ethane concentration is 1.8%. As the center wavelength drift of the MIR-LED (LED34tec) is of concern within the temperature rang of 15~35°C, we propose two schemes to reach a higher sensitivity of the system.
