Paper Abstract

The theoretical demonstration of the advantages of graded reflectance mirrors, when used as output couplers of unstable laser resonators, has been followed by a number of successful experiments in gas and solid-state lasers during the last ten years. The improvement of the output beam quality is in most cases evident and this makes the use of these optical components larger and larger. Alternative laser mirrors are represented by phase-unifying mirrors that show a stepwise reflectance profile but leave unchanged the wavefront of the transmitted laser beam. Both types of mirrors will be described and results of their application reported.
