Bend-resistant fiber for interferometry and sensing applications

Paper Abstract

A novel fiber sensor is introduced based on a tapered bend-resistant fiber interferometer fabricated by a simple fusion splicing technique. Several sensing applications of this fiber sensor are investigated. Simultaneous measurements of refractive index and temperature are proposed and experimentally demonstrated by monitoring phase shifts of different inner and outer cladding modes of the bend-resistant fiber interferometer. Damped vibration sensing using power fluctuations at a specific wavelength selected from the transmission spectrum of the fiber interferometer is presented.
