Microwave brightness temperature measurements over bare soil surfaces

Paper Abstract

Microwave brightness temperatures (TB) were measured over three soils at frequencies of 5 GHz ((lambda) equals 6 cm) and 1.67 GHz ((lambda) equals 18 cm). Field measurements were made with a small, lightweight radiometer system which was found to be quite portable and easy to maneuver and operate with simple hand constructed platforms. The soil plots were wetted to near field capacity and TB measurements were made during the dry-down cycle. Soil profile temperature and moisture content were monitored continuously for the duration of the experiment. Laboratory analyses of soil physical properties such as texture and bulk density were performed to aid in making theoretical calculations of soil dielectric and emissivity. Instrument calibrations were performed periodically by making TB measurements of the sky, over water, and of an absorbing black-body material. Theoretical calculations of the soil dielectric based on measured soil physical properties compared reasonably well to values reported in the literature. Soil emissivities derived from the field measurements were also compared to emissivities based on theoretical calculations.
