Three-dimensional robotic vision with a diffractive optic

Paper Abstract

A robotic vision system design for industrial inspection is proposed. It implements a 2D color CCD camera with a modified focusing lens. A diffractive optic element (DOE) is etched into a small, off axis, region of the lens. A similar region of the detector is dedicated to the DOE image. This image, after some processing provides the third dimension. The output information includes a standard 2D image, the distance to a component under test and if the object is in motion, the direction and velocity towards or away from the detector plane. This system can be designed to operate at visible or infrared wavelengths for a variety of inspection applications.
