Optical properties of the northwest African upwelling region

Paper Abstract

In July-August 1988 optical measurements in the Northwest African upwelling region were carried out. Measurements of vertical profiles of beam attenuation coefficient C(z), diffuse attenuation coefficient Kd, temperature and salinity were made at 39 stations during 9 days. In addition, continuous measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and surface temperature were carried out between stations. Observations showed very high spatial variability of optical properties in the study area. For instance, surface value of beam attenuation coefficient at wavelength 530 nm varied from 0.15 m-1 to 2.6 m -1. In the central part of the study area the filament of relatively cold (temperature about 18 degree(s)) and transparent water (value of beam attenuation coefficient less than 0.6 m-1) was observed. This filament was oriented perpendicularly to the coastline, its width was 30 - 35 km near the shore and 10 - 15 km at 18 degree(s) W. The filament was separated from surrounding waters by frontal zones where value of optical properties increased sharply. Most turbid waters were observed in the southwestern corner of the study area and most transparent in the northeastern corner.
