Paper Abstract

A high-power gold vapor laser emitting 20 watts at the 627.8 nm line for an input power of 15.7 kW is described. The laser head can withstand a temperature of 1730 C. Fee expansion or shrinkage of the internal laser tube is allowed in order to prevent mechanical stress on the laser tube. The electrical circuit is a capacitor transfer circuit with a magnetic assist and a two-stage magnetic compressor. The magnetic assist prevents inverse currents in the thyratron, decreasing the harmful power consumption in the thyratron. The magnetic compressor decreases the laser current rise time to 50 nsec, enabling a thyratron current rise time of 150 nsec and obtaining a prolonged thyratron lifetime.
