Paper Abstract

Binary optics represents a new and developing technology for the reduction of aberrations through the diffractive as opposed to the refractive properties of light. In this paper we consider the aberrations introduced in a simple focussing system when a cylindrical element is placed at the front of the system. We discuss the conventional optical solutions to reduce the aberrations as well as holographic element solutions. The primary tool used in this study is a large commercial optical design and analysis computer program.
