Paper Abstract

In this paper, which is the first of a series, we discuss the optical implementation of signal and image compression via block encoding, runlength encoding, and transform coding. In Part 2 of this series, we propose architectures for data encryption via mono- and poly-alphabetic substitutions, transposition, polygraphic ciphers, vector quantization, and DES (data encryption standard). Analyses emphasize computational cost inclusive of propagation time, as well as a discussion of the information loss expected from physical devices such as spatial light modulators.
