Interaction of a nonspecific maize phospholipid transfer protein with unilamellar phospholipid vesicles: an infrared spectroscopy study

Paper Abstract

The effect of a basic phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) from maize seedings on unilamellar dimyristoyl-phosphatidylglycerol (DMPG) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles has been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that the addition of PLTP affects the thermotropic behavior of large unilamellar vesicles of DMPG by increasing the temperature of the lipid gel-to-fluid phase transition by about 8 degree(s)C. Furthermore, the amide I region indicates that the protein undergoes a conformational change when it interacts with DMPG. On the other hand, PLTP does not interact with DMPC since pure DMPC and DMPC-PLTP complexes exhibit exactly the same temperature behavior. These results indicate that the presence of charges is necessary for the binding of the PLTP to phospholipids.
