Paper Abstract

Synchrotron radiation emitted from electron storage rings is around 1000 times brighter than conventional broadband infrared sources. It is also pulsed on the nanosecond timescale, very stable and reproducible. We have adapted and coupled a conventional vacuum Michelson FTIR system to a synchrotron source. This system is now used for a variety of scientific programs. These include surface reflectivity measurements of the vibrational modes of adsorbed molecules on metals, and transmission measurements of small samples including proteins, small high Tc superconductor crystals and samples in high pressure diamond anvil cells. The time structure of the beam is used in a series of pump-probe measurements using synchronized Nd-YAG and diode lasers. We have also developed a wavefront dividing FTIR instrument which utilizes the spatial coherence of the synchrotron source.
