Paper Abstract

The laser induced damage thresholds (LIDT) of metal surfaces and mirrors can be directly related to the absorption properties of the surface and to the laser temporal profile. This paper presents both the theory and the experimental data for the reflection/absorption properties for a range of metals together with the relevant laser induced damage thresholds. The effect of the surface finish, roughness and chemical state, on the absorption and on the damage thresholds is discussed and quantified.
