Designing robotic systems from sensorimotor modules

Paper Abstract

An approach to the design of sensor-based robotic systems based on sensori-motor modules is proposed. These modules are motivated by a horizontal sensori-motor organization of the brain. Each module performs a specific function, which involves the extraction of some specific item of information from the environment. The proposed approach fits in with a task- driven approach to the design of sensor-based robotic systems. The sensori-motor modules are described and their composition and integration in the design of sensor-based robotic systems is discussed. The proposal offers the potential for the development of a systematic approach to the design of sensor-based robotic systems and the provision of a set of 'off the shelf' building blocks for their practical implementation.
