Paper Abstract

After nearly twenty years in the field of applied diagnostic holography I have become thoroughly weary of seeing holography "written off" because the data reduction is "too time-consuming and cumbersome." Too often, this description of holography has been made without putting the technique in proper perspective. One main reason for holographic data being difficult to process is that the quantity of data that can be (and usually is) stored in a hologram is staggering. This should be touted as an advantage, not a disadvantage. The other major reason for the difficulty of processing holographic data is that holograms also store a staggering amount of noise that too often has an appearance similar to the data. Coherent noise does not just add, it adds coherently, thereby amplifying its effect on the resulting data.
