Paper Abstract

This paper summarizes several years' effort aimed at applying moire methods to the evaluation of structural performance of composite materials. Results relating to edge effects in laminates, bolted joint behavior, design of composite tension and shear test specimens, adhesive joint performance, fracture mechanics studies, and use of shaped holes for reduction of stress concentrations are described. The moire approach is invaluable for examining the effects of nonlinear material response, localized damage, and material inhomogeneity which are inherent in the structural response of fiber reinforced materials.
