Paper Abstract

A new image compression technique that uses what has been termed the "standard wavelet representation" of a function is presented. We show that this representation of an image leads to a subdivision of the frequency domain that is well structured and has smaller divisions than the "nonstandard wavelet representation" (multiscale decomposition) of a function. This allows for a more judicious selection of frequency information that may lead to better compression characteristics.
