Paper Abstract
Modern methods of surface examination show that even high-quality surfaces, fit for their intended purpose, are subject to surface imperfections. Thus it is necessary to agree on imperfection thresholds acceptable for particular applications. After a brief description of four national standards, a table of imperfection threshold values is presented as a quality guideline for different applications. This is based on mean values obtained from an international survey conducted by the author under the auspices of the International Commission for Optics.
