Paper Abstract

The special properties of lens design as an optimization problem are discussed and are related to the properties of the Levenberg-Marquardt (damped least-squares) optimization method. Several variations of the basic method are discussed and compared. Some examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness and limitations of the method.
