Strain in microcrystals and in superlattices, part 2: the sign of surface tension from the experiment

Paper Abstract

The general case of the sign of the size-dependent strain in defect-free cubic microcrystals bounded by {100} faces is examined. Whereas the (F/L)1/2 dependence of strain is confirmed, F being the surface free energy per unit area, and L the microcrystal edge length, the sign of the variation of lattice constant is found to be determined by the sign of surface tension. Some experimental and theoretical results are discussed.
