Using fiber butt coupling for light delivery to the write/read objective in optical recording

Paper Abstract

Power transfer is analyzed in an optical recording application. We compare using only a collimating lens to deliver light from a laser diode to the write/read objective versus using a lens and a singlemode fiber that is butt-coupled to the laser diode. The system that employs an intermediate singlemode fiber is shown to deliver more power in an optical configuration that exhibits a large object plane field of view (collector numerical aperture ?0.11). Furthermore, the fiber/lens system delivers a circular, anastigmatic beam to the write/read objective. Several potential advantages of fiber/lens systems are outlined.
