Paper Abstract

An experiment is conducted on using laser mode splitting technology to measure displacement. A laser longitudinal mode is split into two frequencies (modes) by the birefringence effect of an intracavity quartz crystal wedge. The magnitude variation of frequency splitting is proportional to the displacement of the wedge crossing the intracavity laser beam. The dependence of sensitivity and measurement range on the wedge angle and angle between crystalline axis and intracavity laser beam is studied. A resolution of 10 nm is obtained.
