Paper Abstract

A computational model for recognition of three-dimensional (3-D) man-made objects based on visual perception principles is presented. In this approach, object faces are used as perceptual entities in accordance with the perceptual phenomena of face-shape constancy and face-pose consistency. Face-shape constancy is modeled by continuous maps in which topological proximity is the major consideration. To accommodate 3-D space knowledge on viewpoint consistency, a perceptual view space is developed in which face-pose consistency from an arbitrary view point can be deduced qualitatively.
