Paper Abstract

This work describes a long-period grating filter with tunable attenuation. The device is ideally suitable for equalization of the output power spectrum of erbium-doped fiber amplified spontaneous emission sources. The tunability arises from incorporating the grating in a Mach-Zehnder configuration that includes a tunable coupler. Experimentally, we achieved a change in attenuation of approximately 14 dB in a wavelength band centered at 1531 nm. The peak-to-peak ripple in the power spectrum of the source improved from 12.2 to 3.8 dB in the wavelength range from 1524 to 1563 nm. Tunability assures that the spectral ripple can be controlled over a wide range of pump power.
