ITF2020 Health will focus on the potential of integrated silicon photonics for revolutionary healthcare solutions such as precision medicine. Visible light is the common probe in medical diagnostic testing devices. It is used to count and visualize cells, analyze biological tissues, determine DNA sequences, etc. Up until now, doctors needed to resort to big microscopes and spectroscopes. But what if we could make these devices more compact and low-cost, smart and easy to use? Surely, that would open the door to new, widely accessible approaches for diagnostics, therapy and follow-up. Developing such systems is possible by integrating photonic and electronic circuits on silicon chips that combine miniaturized versions of optical components such as lasers, waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, filters and ring resonators. Such hybrid biophotonic chips are suitable for mass production. And when hundreds and thousands of them work in parallel, it results in an extremely high testing throughput. As a pioneer in photonic technologies for sensors and diagnostic systems, imec leads the development of such biophotonic chips. That’s why ITF2020 Health is your opportunity to delve into this new and promising research domain.
